Have you ever worked in the school’s Life Garden? The Bellows Life Garden is the place near the entrance to the school that says “GIRLS.”  Once in a while, parents volunteer to come to the garden to tend it and plant flowers with kids.  Ari’s mom, Rachel, helps out a lot with the garden. She helps organize activities in the garden for our school. This happens class by class in order to get the garden cared for.

The garden is a bit hidden from the rest of the school. From the sidewalk, on the right side of the front of the school, you might notice the sign that says “Life Garden”  (underneath: since 2007). Mr. Galgano said: “For the 4th-grade concert in 2007, we wrote a song that mentioned the new garden.” The garden used to be called the “outside classroom”  at the time Mr. Galgano wrote the song.

There are different plants in the garden such as marigolds, catnip, and ferns. There is also a little bridge to a shed with garden tools and a small grassy area. Once there was a day in the library when everyone got to look for capsules in the garden and then take outlines from a poem to put in the correct order. Students go in the garden a few times a year.

Students would love to utilize the garden more.  In our beautiful Life Garden, we can read, be mindful, plant things, and relax.  If we were more active with the garden we would all feel calmer and subjects that would normally frustrate us would not be as aggravating. It is a wonderful place to be in and we are lucky to have such an amazing space. We should be grateful that we have a garden at all.   Some schools don’t. So next time you walk past the Life Garden, take a look at it and appreciate all it has to offer!
