This season welcomed a brand new superstar to the New York baseball scene. His name is Aaron Judge and he is an outfielder for the New York Yankees. Judge is unusually large for a baseball player as he stands 6 feet 7 inches tall and weighs over 280 pounds! Because of his huge size and strength, Judge has enormous power to hit many home runs.  Aaron also wears number 99 on his uniform because that is the largest number a player can have.

Aaron first joined the Yankees at the end of last season, but this was his first full year playing in the major leagues.  The Yankees expected great things out of him, but no one could have expected just how good a year he would have.  From the first day of the season, Judge began hitting long home runs almost every day. Before long, he was leading the entire American League in home runs, and fans across the country would show up early to games to watch Aaron take batting practice.

By the summer, Aaron had become one of the most popular new stars in baseball even though he was just a rookie. He got the most votes of any American League player to play in the All-Star Game, which is where the best players in each league get to play against one another.  Aaron also was picked to compete in the Home Run Derby, which is a home run contest among the best power hitters in baseball. With the whole country watching, Aaron put on a show by hitting the longest and the greatest number of home runs.  By the end of the night, he was the Home Run Derby champion!

As the year moved on, Yankee fans began showing up to the ballpark dressed in judge robes and there was a special section of seats called Judge’s Chambers.  Soon Aaron began to challenge the record for most home runs ever hit in a rookie season, which was held by the great Mark McGwire who had hit 49 homers back in 1987.  By the time the season was over, Judge had set a new rookie record with an amazing 52 home runs!  He also helped lead the Yankees into the playoffs where they nearly made it all the way to the World Series.

At just 25 years old, Aaron Judge is already the biggest star in baseball – both in size and fame.  He has a long career ahead of him and it will be exciting to see how many home runs he will hit next year!
