This past year it was exactly 100 years ago that World War I ended. World War I began in 1914 and lasted until 1918. The war lasted exactly four years, three months and fourteen days. There were two groups fighting each other: the Allies and the Central Powers. The Allies were Russia, France, Britain, Italy, The US, Japan, Romania, Serbia, Belgium, Greece, Portugal, and Montenegro. The Central Powers were Germany, Austria-Hungary, Turkey, and Bulgaria. WWI was known for many different names such as: “The War to End All Wars,” “The War of Nations”   and “The Great War.”

The reason why World War I began was when Prince, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary went on a trip with his pregnant wife, and someone shot and killed them. The person that killed them was part of a Serbian terrorist group called The Black Hand. This event started the war, but there were many other events that led up to it.  The countries were also fighting over trying to get lost territories back and building larger empires. Some countries were also working together against other countries and building their military forces.

WW I was the deadliest recorded conflict in the history of the human race:  over sixteen million people died. The war killed almost seven million civilians and ten million soldiers.

The war ended on November 11, 1918, when the leaders of both sides signed a peace agreement.  By then the four empires (Russia, Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Turkey) had collapsed.

In 1919, the Treaty of Versailles ended World War I.  This Treaty also established the League of Nations to help prevent future wars. The League of Nations helped Europe rebuild.  Fifty-three nations joined by 1923. On October 24, 1945, the United Nations formed. Exactly 193 countries are members of the United Nations.
