Julia is Sesame Street’s first new Muppet in a decade, but that is not the only thing that makes her special. Her debut was on April 10th.   The happy, four year old, who has Autism, is also here to help young kids recognize children with autistic traits and to teach them about acceptance.

Julia has green eyes, red hair and is very fond of her stuffed rabbit. Parents of kids with autism told workers at Sesame Street how important this  show is for their kids. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, one in sixty eight American children have autism. Julia first started last year as a character in Sesame’s books and digital offerings. They realized that if Julia appeared on television, she would have even more impact on children around the world.

Although she may get distracted easily, be sensitive to loud noises, and repeat what others say, Julia isn’t defined by autism. Along with being one of Elmo’s friends, the red-haired puppet is artistic, likes to pick flowers, enjoys playing with Abby Cadabby, and loves to sing with the rest of the gang. Sesame Street writer Christine Ferraro says,

“I would love her to be not Julia, the kid on Sesame Street who has autism.  I would like her to be just Julia.”

Though it is not clear if Julia will become a permanent character, she is scheduled to appear in two episodes this season.  Sesame Street is making Autism easier for all children to understand.
